Best Husband Award

Tonight we had a PTO Meeting at work that I needed to attend at 6:00. Beckett had a rough morning at Casey's. When I texted my mom that he was upset, Mom went over there and took him for a walk, and she said he was fine. (She also said he recognized her right away!) I think he just wants to be held to go to sleep, and if he isn't, he gets fussy, and then over-tired, and then he gets upset and he can't get to sleep. He also seems to be teething, which I'm sure doesn't feel good. I told Casey I would come home and get him, but she said he was fine after the initial crying. It literally made my stomach hurt, though! If he has a rough day again tomorrow, I'm going to see if we can go to the doctor on Thursday. The What to Expect book said to contact the doctor if he had "an unusal amount of crying". He rarely cries, so I just know he isn't feeling well.

Anyway, Shonn knew I was sad about missing Beckett tonight and also worried about him, so after he picked the little squish up, he drove over to Mattoon after and we had dinner together. I am so thankful that he comes up with such thoughtful gestures and shows me he knows how I feel. I'm lucky to have him!

Beckett was all smiles and giggles at school. He just lights up a room. :)

Here Shonn is making Beckett laugh, which he does all the time. I love watching them together.

Thanks, babe, for being a great husband and dad!

Dedication Sunday

Last Sunday was Dedication Day at church. It was a beautiful ceremony and Beckett was adorable. He is such a gift and we feel so, so blessed.

Here were the vows we took in front of the whole church:

"Today I commit to Live Christ in my Home.
I promise to love and nurture my child in the same way God loves and nurtures me.
I promise to instruct my child by teaching them and correcting them God’s way.
Today I commit to Live Christ in my Home."

Greg Sexton did the sermon, and he always does an amazing job. He is very organized and relates several passages in the bible to our lives. This message was about parenting, and we kept a copy of the notes for Beckett's baby book. He was given a bible with his picture on the front, a certificate, and a collage of the other babies who were dedicated that day. (There were 13 in all!) When Beckett's picture went up on the screen and they introduced us, everyone "awwwww"d over his bear picture. A gentleman in the front row said, "Oh, that poor kid," and Greg goes, "I'm betting Shonn had nothing to do with that outfit. Christy, where did you find that thing?" He then went on to say, "I've gotta say, Beckett you are looking good! You are the first baby that has ever worn a tie for dedication!" It was really cute. I brought the video camera, and videoed part of the sermon, but forgot to give my friend Heather the camera for when we went up front. I was so disappointed! But the important thing is that Shonn and I made those important vows!

Houdini

B comes in the bathroom when I'm getting ready in the morning and we "talk". I love when he coos and sings back-and-forth with me! Shonn says he's a morning person, which he definitely gets from his dad.

As you can see from this photo, I've had to start buckling his seat belt because he is such a wiggle worm! He's so curious and seems to be learning he has control over his body, so... "watch what I can do!" Now that I'm thinking about it, though, it could be that he's trying to escape because he's tired of hearing how L'Oreal Voluminous mascara really helps open Mommy's eyes...

Relay for Life 2011

Last night was the Coles County Relay for Life. This year's theme was "Send Cancer on a Permanent Vacation!" Beckett wore a pink ribbon for Grandma Hild, Great-Grandma Beard, and Clara. We also got luminiaries in their honor.

For the past two years, I've helped organize our school district Relay team, which usually ends up being one of the largest teams at Peterson Park. With over 500 employees, it's no wonder! In actuality, all I have to do is plan meetings; the committee that volunteers each year does an amazing amount of work and donates a lot of time to the cause.

Our team's fundraising goal this year was $10,000, which was ambitious, especially because the event is about a month earlier than usual this year, and our non-certified staff does not even receive their first pay until September 15th. We used a combination of payroll deductions, footprint sales, a silent auction, a basket raffle, t-shirt sales, and luminaries to raise the money. Ultimately, the event is about fellowship and honoring memories as well as surivors. It's one of the only opportunities we have to come together as a district to hang out and spend time together as friends, not just co-workers.

This year, since I recently changed buildings in the district, I got to see all of my middle school friends. They loved on Beckett, who received several babysitting offers for his cheeks alone. I really love my new job, but I miss all the friends I made at the middle school. However, there was a dunk tank for middle school personnel, so I'm glad I missed out on that one! :)

The dunk tank raised $280 last night, which, at $1 per 3 throws, means 280 people paid to dunk their teachers! (Or co-workers...) The idea was our friend, Rachel's, and Shonn went with her husband, Rich, to Mowequea to pick it up last week. They have to take it back today after church. Shonn is so helpful and nice about donating his time.

We didn't stay up all night; in fact, we had to leave around 7:30 when Mr. B started making some...requests....that we head home. Regardless, though, we had a wonderful time and enjoyed celebrating so many stories of those who have battled cancer and won. Beckett was asleep before we pulled out of the parking lot.

Listening to Gramps

Beckett is fascinated by Gramps. Whenever Dad talks to him, Beckett is really still and focuses intensely on his voice. It's darling. As you can see here, he is learning how to build the perfect fort, which is a skill that will likely come in handy on a future adventure with Gramps himself.

Problem...

Say hello to two of my addictions. I felt like admitting it was the first step toward healing, and this really needs to stop. If I'm at a gas station where these items are immediately visible, I will not be able to stop myself from buying them and proceeding to ruin my next meal by eating them. All.

I'm hoping that since I've opened up about this, the satisfaction I get from devouring these snacks will go away and I'll start eating apples and tofu.

I'll keep you posted on that...

Beckett's Room

This is way overdue, and most of these pictures are now outdated, but I wanted to share Beckett's nursery decor. I’m really happy with how it turned out, and it’s still evolving. I am starting a map project for one of the walls now, but I’ll update it as I finish. In the meantime, I’ll use these pics to give you a tour and I’ll note what’s changed so far!

As you will probably see, I am not really a fan of overly-babyish design or decoration; in fact, I really like babies' rooms that have elements suitable for any other room in the house. I like things that look as though they would be good design for any age, but in a more playful way for kids. That's what I tried to do here.

Shonn and I both love boating, which is one of the reasons we really enjoy living in Sullivan. We are so close to Lake Shelbyville and can be on the lake in 5 minutes if our boat is docked at the marina. That was part of the inspiration behind the "nautical-fisherman" look. The other credit goes to the two buoys I found from Pottery Barn last year. I loved the weathered look and the colors seemed so boyish - one part cape cod and one part pure mischief. There were also some amazing distressed oars in the catalog, which were sold out. But at that point, I already had my heart set on this look, oars or no.

The theme began the hunt for the perfect elements. What I love most about decorating is the creative process. It’s all about the search for me. I absolutely love finding the perfect piece somewhere and the hope it will fit, and the anticipation of getting it home to try it out. And there’s nothing like the satisfaction of seeing a variety of things put together in a way that creates a complete look. Because of the hunt, I rarely buy sets or matchy-matchy things. I prefer to find pieces that compliment each other and look as though they were meant to fit, but are different enough to be interesting. I like the uniqueness of a room that has a little history behind it - pieces that come from experience and adventures. So let me tell you about the adventures behind my son's room...
>

This corner is right when you enter the room. It's the snuggle station! The most important piece in this image is the glider and ottoman. I did a lot of reserach on brands and fabrics and sat in a lot of chairs. (I would recommend the book, Baby Bargains, which helps sort through the overwhelming pile of baby stuff available!) I'm really happy with this set, which is a curodory chenille fabric and was really reasonable, but a brand recommended by the book. We've logged several hours in this seat!

Above the glider is a shelf I found at Third Sunday Market with my friends Casey, Joni, Lisa and Angie. It's distressed look ended up working perfectly with the old, wind-worn ship look I had in my mind. It's adorned with the buoys I credit for helping my inspiration and a floating device thing (Shonn knows the technical term) I found at a tackle store in Sullivan. It actually looks a little used, so I bleached the rope and yellow stuff, but I think that's just the way it looks. Now, I have it propped on a ruddy-red vintage copy of Robinson Curusoe and an old, green leather Moby Dick, which I LOVE. For some reason, I feel like it looks so much more bare here, without those two small elements. Anyway... The quilt on the wall IS part of a set I got from either Babies r Us or Target - both places had it; I just can't remember which place I ended up ordering it from. I think the colors are great, and it is definitely suitable for any age. (But ALL boy. Love.) Lexi is posing for this picture, too. She can be the ship's mascot.

You can also see one of the window treatments here. I used faux wood blinds for the shuttery-look that can be preppy-nautical, but also could lean to a little old-looking. The red treatments I purchased at Target and then lined with some fabric I ordered from fabric.com. This window has tan contrasting fabric that says, "When you wish upon a star" in a repeating, small font. I pictured being on the water and looking up at the sky, where the stars shine so brightly. It's actually a Pincochicco fabric, trimmed out with a bleached rope detail, and pillow batting on the inside to add some weight. It was pretty easy to do.
This is the other window treatment, across the room on the khaki wall. For it, I used navy polka-dot fabric to match the contrast wall. I lined it and used the same rope trim. I feel like it's a good combination of colors and patterns without being too Americana.

This wire shark is a PB Teen purchase. It's 4-feet long and takes up a large portion of the wall across from the crib. This is also the wall I'm planning a map treatment for. I think it's going to look awesome as soon as I get the time to actually get it up. In the meantime, the shark by itself is fun. I like how he sticks out from the wall. Again, all boy.
I like this detail photo for a couple of reasons. First of all, you can see the basket of books on the side table. It's filled with my favorites, waiting for his arrival. The basket is a sea grass with a terry liner. The textures worked. But I especially love the piece the basket is sitting on. It was built from reclaimed wood by a local artist, who then painted it in a delicious variety of colors and was roughed up. I love, love, love it. (And the guy who built it is awesome, too, which helps.) Shonn and I bought it at an annual art show in town, called Bohemia, held at an old factory that has been converted into an artists' community center. Charlie also made an appearance in this photo. He could definitey survive on a rough ship.

We ended up painting the back wall a deep navy that I love. I was really scared when we first put it on the wall because it was so dark. I'm really, really happy with the effect. Also since this picture was taken, we've added a little table and stools under the window, which Shonn's grandpa (Beckett's great-grandpa) made by hand from Hackberry trees taken from the family farm. This sentimental value only adds to the asthetic - it looks great and feels great in Beckett's room. (I'll add a pic later.)
This is on the other side of the window. (below) It's a mossy-colored shelf for the video monitor, which was on the bassinet at the time of the photo. The image on the shelf was the first picture taken of Beckett after his hospital bath. Such a sweet little face. The red lantern is a camping lantern Mom and I got at a camping store for the baby shower.

Above are pictures of the other piece of furniture Shonn's Grandpa Hild built: his crib. It's lovely and will convert into a toddler and then twin bed, so Beckett will be sleeping in an object made of love for several years to come. As for the less-meaningful decor on that wall, remember the PB Oars I mentioned? Since they were sold out, I decided to make my own and personalize them for Beckett. I bought two wooden oars at Ace Hardware in Sullivan along with some painter's tape, spray paint, and stencils. After distressing both oars with nails, a hammer, a wire brush, and sandpaper, I put tape over sections I wanted to leave natural wood-tone, and then spray painted with a variety of colors, added tape and stencils for the design I wanted, and then added another layer. I don't think Shonn had much faith in this idea, but he ended up loving the outcome. I'm really happy with it, too. I especially like that the one oar has lettering similar to a boat's alpha-numeric identification tag, but is actually his initials and birthdate. You can also (kinda) see one of Beckett's favorite pieces: his First Anywhere Chair. It's featured in his monthly birthday shoots and is from PB Kids.

As for the bedding (above), the skirt, and bumper were part of the set I talked about earlier. I wanted a red gingham fitted sheet to go with it, so I got this one from PB kids. I couldn't find a pillow exactly like I wanted, so I bought tent-type fabric from fabric.com (free shipping with $35 purchase!) and some rope trim and made this one.
Let's talk about the other furniture in the room next, including the changing table and dresser in the closet. (I need to take some closet pics, because this kid has a closet most adolescent girls would die for.) The furniture was built by a local Amishman and it is so beautiful. It is the same stain color as the crib (and unpictured table set), so this will be a group Beckett can use forever. The drawers are dovetail-fit and the pieces are all wood. My mom and dad purchased the changing table, and Shonn and I got the dresser. I absolutely love it. (Yoder's Cabinetry in Sullivan, Illinois. They completely customize and make amazing pies. Call them! 217-728-2166)

The letters above the table came from Hobby Lobby, but look so much cooler than Hobby Lobby. (I'm not saying anything bad about HL - I'm a huge fan! But these look like something I found in a junk shop.) Actually, the letters were the first purchase that committed us to Beckett's name. (The subsequent items were quickly ordered and monogrammed by the good folks at PB.) The anchor was also from HL. The little buoy to the left of the changer I found at a little boutique in Champaign - it's all wood and really heavy! The lamp on the table is the PB Fisherman's Lamp, and although a little more expensive, it totally adds to the room and is a very heavy, nice piece. I think it looks really boy-ish, too, and will be able to transition when this theme isn't B's favorite. (Or his mom is ready to redecorate.)

Here's a peek into the closet, where a clock hangs in direct sight from the rocker. I love this clock; my mom got it for me for Christmas and it matches the colors and feel of the room perfectly. (It's like weathered and worn coloring.) The closet walls are painted half rustic red, half khaki with a white chairrail dividing the sections. I love the look in a small area because it makes a bigger impact and doesn't feel too stuffy. It's kind of fun to think of a chairrail in an informal space because it's unexpected. This feels kind of like the capitan's quarters on an old ship. (I'd also like to point out the little guy hanging out near the closet - he's actually Sherlock Holmes, but looks oh-so-much like I picture an old craggy fisherman with the pipe and his worn face. Shonn and I picked him up at an antique shop on our way home from NC one year. We stopped at every antique shop along a 200-mile stretch. It was so much fun.)

Here's the top part of the dresser we got to go with the changing table - this isn't a great pic, but you get the idea. The baskets are from TJ MAXX.
There is more, but I'm exhausted...

I hope you enjoyed the tour! Updates to come!

Eating Real Food

We had fun giving Beckett food for the first time last week! I had fun making the video, too. For some reason, I doubt he'll have fun watching it with his first girlfriend in high school.

Greatie Grandma Came to Visit

On Wednesday, Beckett had a special visitor! Greatie Grandma came to plsy with Grammy and Beck. he sang lots of nursery rhymes to him and held him close. He loved her! When Shonn came home after school, Beckett didn't even take his eyes off GG long enough to give his daddy some love. He kept staring right at Greatie Gram. I think they BOTH had a great time, and we all hope she visits again soon.

camera ready

Beckett is napping on my lap (charmed life), and I've been learning some cool new tricks with my video camera! I needed to take some pictures for his Friday Photo, but the camera was in Shonn's truck, so I decided to try the "Snapshot" feature on our flip cam. Basically, you take a video, and then select frames to create photos. It's so neat. Here is the video: And here are some of the photos I edited (using Picasa) after I grabbed them from the video.

4-month appointment

Beckett had his 4-month check up yesterday. Shonn and I met at Dr. Willett's office with our questions and nerves...he was slated to get more shots. The ladies helped weigh and measure him and they said he was the cutest baby they have! I love them more for that.

Beckett now weighs 16.1 pounds, which is the 75th percentile of kids his age. I took him in for a height/weight check 3 weeks ago, and he hasn't gained much weight since then. Dr. Willett was glad, even though Beckett grew 1/2 inch in those three weeks! He is now 25.5" long, which is the 55th percentile for length.

We talked about starting to introduce real foods and discussed the pros/cons of starting with rice cereal. There are several studies out that link it with Type 2 Diabetes, and Dr. Willett didn't see much nutritional value in starting there, especially since Beckett is eating so well now. He encouraged us to start with green foods, because "once you go orange (or sweet) it's hard to go veggie." I'm kind of excited to see how Beckett reacts to new foods! Shonn and I are going to get some this weekend and record his first reaction. It should be good!

Dr. Willett was also really happy to hear Beckett is still nursing. (I guess I won the "Golden Boob" for breastfeeding longer than any other moms in his practice.) I didn't think 4 months was that long, but he said that it just gets hard for a lot of women when they go back to work. I can definitely see that! I'm hoping we can continue at least through Christmas. I know 6 months will help him with the antibodies and immunities he needs. I can't believe that's only in 2 months! He is growing so fast!

We got to the dreaded part of the appointment - the shots - and he did so great! He hardly cried at all. Shonn thinks he's especially tough. :) I fed and snuggled him to calm him a little, and he was asleep by the time we pulled out of the parking lot. He is such a good baby.

It was a great visit!

Caught on Tape!

Beckett has become very verbal. He coos, laughs, screeches, and grunts. It's been really hard to document, though, because he still refuses to "perform" on demand - anytime he sees the video camera or an electronic device, he stops whatever cute behavior we were trying to capture and stares at it, transfixed. Everything changed last night, though, when he was sleeping... check out this video!

The Stuarts' Housewarming

On Saturday, our friends Rachel and Rich had a Housewarming Party. It was a lot of fun, hosted by Ingrid. I forgot to take pictures of the amazing layout, complete with food labels, custom cupcakes, and sugar cookie favors, but I did get some pics of the event. Everything looked great, and it was fun catching up with all of my middle school friends! We are really happy for Rachel and Rich, who are all settled in their beautiful new home.
Here's "Kiki" playing with Molly:

Katie is so good with kids - it's probably part of why she's such a great teacher. Here she is with Miss Molly, in her custom dress. Adorable!

Beckett loves Miss Ingrid! She brought him a little lovie puppy that he has started snuggling with. It's easy to see why he has a little crush - she's gorgeous AND makes amazing cookies. (Beckett's dad loves them, too!)

Here is a picture featuring some of the middle school crew! Unfortunately, I didn't think to take pictures until the end (fail!), but here are the girls that were still around: Julia, Katie (with Molly), Rachel (the star of the day!), me, Ingrid, Megan, Sharon.

Here is Rachel with Ingrid. Such great girls!

Here are my guys, and you can see some of the landscaping in the back. It's gorgeous, and they have an amazing in-ground pool, too!

Thanks for a great time!

It's My 4-Month Birthday!

Happy birthday to Beckett!

He's four months already and growing like a little weed. He's a happy boy, busy cooing, singing, and screeching. He loves his changing table and giggles and kicks when we put him on there to get him dressed.

Here's what we have to look forward to this month:

By the end of this month, Beckett should be able to:

  • hold head steady when upright (Check!)

  • on stomach, raise chest, supported by arms (Check!)

  • Pay attention to an object as small as a raisin (?)

  • squeal in delight (DOUBLE check)

  • reach for an oject (Check!)

  • Smile spontaneously (Check!)

  • smile back when we smile (Check!)

  • grasp a rattle held to backs or tips of fingers (Check!)

  • keep head level with body when pulled to sitting (Check!)

Beckett might be able to:

  • roll over

  • bear some weight on legs (Check, since about 2 months)

  • say "ah-goo" (Check)

  • razz (not quite sure what this is...if it's making "raspberries", that's a check - one of his new favorite things to do)

  • turn in direction of a voice (Check)

Beckett may possibly be able to:

  • sit without support

  • pull up to a standing position from sitting

  • stand holding on to someone or something (Shonn says he can do this now)

  • object if you try to take a toy away

  • work to get to a toy out of reach

  • pass a cube or other object from one hand to the other

  • look for a dropped object (Check - look at his "Let's Have a Little Talk" video)

  • rake with fingers a tiny object and pick it up in fist

  • babble, combining vowels and consonants (He's at the start of doing this now, especially in the car. It's so cute!

Looks like another exciting month is on the way! Happy birthday, baby!

Short B-Day Clip

I did get a little bit of a "Happy Birthday" video!

It stopped recording because my drive was too full! I had to "erase" pictures, which I can't bring myself to do, so I uploaded them all to my Picasa web album.
Aren't my guys so cute?!

Happy Birthday, Dad!

Beckett helped his dad blow out candles this year! He also dressed up for the occasion. (Shonn had on the same outfit, but I made him change for pictures.) This picture shows the extent of celebration I could convince Shonn to have - when I said I wanted to video the event, I thought he was going to pick up the cake and go outside to escape. Hopefully Beckett will want birthday extravaganzas like his mommy, but I'm betting he'll be like Dad and say, "Seriously, Mom? Another picture?"

Kiddos at TNT

These kids belong to my really good friends from high school! We hardly get together, but this is the second time in about a month we've gotten to see each other, with a few changes in the roster. From left to right, there is Brody Bennett (my friend Angie's son), then Julia and Hayden Moody (Joni's kiddos), Gabe Bennet (Brody's brother) holding Beckett, and next to them are Evie and Michael Walton (Carrie's daughter and son). We met at TNT Pizza for lunch today in an impromtu get-together. Angie and Carrie both live out-of-town, and even though Joni and I both live in town AND send our kids to Casey, we hardly get to see each other. Casey and her kids were going to come, but they weren't feeling great. Katy couldn't make it, either, but we all agreed to continue the effort of the occasional get-together. The next one may be for Sullivan's Homecoming, which is in early October. It's really fun to share this phase of our lives and to see my friends as mothers. They've done a great job.

Workin' It

Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry

We made it through the first week! And by "we", I mean a small army. Here is a list of thank yous for the people that made survival possible this week.

1) My wonderful husband. Shonn's birthday was Thursday, and what did he do? Made dinner. (pic above) He also made dinner Friday night. Every night this week, he helped with the dishes, laundry, food - whatever needed to be done so that when I got home, I could snuggle with Beckett. His help made it so much easier this week. He's such a good man!

2) My wonderful Dad. You saw the blog entry about his fun day with the Brick. I forgot to mention, however, that they also made a "life-size model of the universe". Our closet is packed. Dad hasn't been feeling great this weekend because of allergies (pollen count is ridiculous right now), and I hope he gets feeling better soon!

3) My amazing mother-in-law. The dinners Shonn cooked were purchased and prepared by Janis when she was here on Monday and Friday. That helped so much in terms of time - I didn't have to spend any on food, and I could give it to the little guy instead. She also loves Beckett so much and it shows from the fun they have together. She sings him songs and plays games with him all day long! This week, he must have really liked Jack and Jill - Grandma made a note that he "was really surprised that Jack broke his crown!"

4) An incredible boss who looked at me at the end of each day and said, "Christy - go home. Beckett needs his mommy." I am so thankful for a supportive co-worker who really gets the importance of family. He never once made me feel guilty for leaving on time.

5) Casey for watching Beckett twice and sending me a picture of him laughing. She also loves him and cuddles him all day!

6) My friend, Katy, for sending me a message that when she dropped her son off at Katy's, Beckett was playing with Kiptyn and really happy.

7 )Charlie and Lexi for getting their hair cut so I don't have to vaccuum twice per day.

8) Everyone who took the time to ask me how I was doing and to reassure me.

9) The other working moms who gave me advice on the first day back via facebook.

10) And of course that sweet little guy who smiles and melts my heart when I get home!

Gramps!

i HAD to write one more entry about what a fun time my little guy had with his GRAMPS today! I am so thankful he's going to get to spend time with my dad, because he is so wonderful with kids and Beckett already adores him. So today, they hung out and played all kinds of games. On Beckett's daily sheet, Gramps wrote they played Peek-A-Boo, read books (including the entire Bible as well as War and Peace), built a model of a nuclear missle, and tandem bungy jumped off the roof. That's my dad! (He also mentioned how many diapers Beckett "filled" which will undoubtedly create some good laughs when he is older.) I love my dad so much and am hopeful Beckett gets his sense of adventure, fun, and humor. I appreciate him spending so much time with his grandson and creating these wonderful memories.

Here is a picture Dad sent me with the caption: "Holding onto Gramps." So blessed!

etsy addiction

This is a problem, people. I have been obsessing over what photo props to use in Beckett's next photo shoot, and there are SO MANY adorable options on etsy. Once I finally settled on what I wanted to use, I began "comparison shopping" to see which shop could make it with the exact yarn, thread, size I wanted...and for the least amount. I have to say I'm really happy with my choices - a pumpkin hat, an elf hat, and an aviator cap, which will get us through fall and Christmas pictures! Oh my - he is going to be soooo kissable. (And soooo embarrassed as a high schooler with lots of cutsy pictures floating about.)

Here are the shops I ended up going with (some of the links won't work - I think etsy is a little bogged down with other addicts like me shopping tonight.)

Tough Day...

My friend Jenn and I were talking about how things like facebook and blogs make it seem like everyone's lives are perfect. Who posts negative stuff, after all? It's like people use the internet as a way to project perfection...and that can easily cause a case of comparison that leaves you feeling bad about your oh-so-normal life. I have a wonderful, beautiful life, but it isn't perfect. And sometimes, it's downright hard. Today's post is about that reality. Don't get me wrong - I have NOTHING to complain about - I am blessed. Ironically, today was hard for that exact reason. My little slice of perfection was at home while I was gone for registration. I have a great job and I love the people who work there, but it is very, very hard to leave my little man. I want to bundle him up and take him with me.

I am trying so hard to learn and master the balance that life requires, but I find myself constantly feeling guilty: Guilty for not spending the same amount of time at work, guilty for being away from Beckett all day, guilty for not giving enough time to Shonn, guilty for not having dinner made every night or laundry folded and put away. It feels impossible to do all those things, but that acknowledged impossibility doesn't lessen my feelings of guilt. My friend Krista says that all moms feel it to some extent and that it's just about doing the best you can... Luckily, the best I can is readily accepted by the people around me. I'm supported at home by a wonderful husband who helps out and two sets of parents who want to do whatever they can for us. I'm equally lucky to work with people who appreciate my contributions and value family while understanding priorities.

That being said, I have a feeling this year is going to be about learning and adjusting to do the best I can in this perfectly imperfect life. And along the way, I'll continue to be thankful for the amazing blessings I've been given, starting with the one that is snuggled up in my lap, snoring contentedly.

Now I think I'll go post a picture of this perfect moment on facebook.

Thanks, Grandma Hild!

Janis watched Beckett for his first "daycare day" today. She filled out his daily log and it sounds like they had a wonderful day full of books, songs, games, the pool, hugs, kisses, and (of course) eating & sleeping.

I am so, SO thankful she is willing to spend two days a week with Beckett so he gets lots of love, snuggles, and one-on-one attention. It's an hour and a half ONE WAY, and she comes down the night before to spend the night. She also makes us dinner! Here's what's left of tonight's casserole...as you can tell, it was good!

Today was obviously an emotional day for me. She knew it was going to be hard, so she brought me these flowers and a book about Motherhood. She also gave me lots of hugs. I feel so lucky to have her as a mother-in-law; she cares so much and is a very giving person!

Thank you, Janis... We love you!

Yes, but...

He's asleep, but he's in my arms.
